UPDATE 10/9 4:45 P.M. – The Cayuga County Health Department confirms no toxins were discovered in today’s test samples. The City of Auburn and Town of Owasco will continue to monitor public water supplies.

 

AUBURN, NY (CortacaToday) – Low levels of toxins have been detected in the drinking water in the City of Auburn and Town of Owasco.

On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, the Cayuga County Health Department reports .23 micrograms per liter of microcystin was found in Auburn and .26 micrograms per liter in Owasco. Microcystin is a toxin associated with harmful algal blooms. Health officials say however, the water is acceptable for drinking, food preparation, and all household use.

The detected toxin levels fall below the EPA’s 10-day Health Advisory level of .3 micrograms per liter of microcystin.

Additional samples are set to be collected today and sent out for analysis. More information can be found on the Cayuga County website.
