ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — An Ithaca firefighter has ended his service.

After a 35 1/2 career with the Ithaca Fire Department, Charles Heath III retired this morning. Heath joined IFD in March 1990, following in his father’s footsteps. He’s played a big role in the department, according to a post Friday morning on IFD’s Facebook page.

“Heath was instrumental in the formation and progress of our department. From our automobile extrication response to our hazmat team to our boat rescue and so much more, FF Heath was always there on the cutting edge as our department evolved to meet the community’s needs.”

“For decades, every young firefighter has looked up to him for leadership and mentorship, and he delivered. His dedication to our craft is second to none. The impact he has made as he responded to calls for help is immeasurable. He has shared his kind heart and warm smile with thousands in Ithaca, and he is truly someone who has made a difference.”

Heath’s retirement became official at 7 a.m. Friday.
