LANSING, NY (607NewsNow) – The Town of Lansing has broken ground at the site of its new Department of Public Works (DPW) facility.

On May 17, officials gathered to mark the occasion, which has been years in the making.

“What we are celebrating today is the first step in constructing a new, much larger facility that will accommodate not only a fleet of trucks and equipment but will provide additional office space for the hardworking DPW employees,” said Town Supervisor Ruth Groff. “This facility will bring Lansing into the 21st century in terms of standards and efficiencies.”

In recent years, the town recognized that the current 21,500 square-foot facility, which was built nearly 60 years ago in 1968, no longer met the operational needs of the municipality and its workers.

According to DPW Director and Highway Superintendent Mike Moseley, the project gained traction and momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, though his predecessors saw the writing on the wall. Moseley says the planning process, done with design firm Colliers Engineering, was lengthy and not without difficulty.

After Moseley and the Highway Barn Committee, which included Colliers and contractors LeChase Construction, were able to bring the project cost down, it was all systems go.

The new facility will double the square footage of the current campus, providing extra space for equipment and workers. It will also relieve a crowded Lansing Town Hall, as the Planning & Code Enforcement Department will relocate to the new building upon its completion. Additionally, there will be space for future employee expansion.

Construction at the future DPW will take about a year and a half. Moseley says there will be plenty of difficult work to be done after the building is occupied, as the road materials must be moved, and some deconstruction will take place.

In addition to the technical crews hired for the project, Town Supervisor Ruth Groff was effusive in her praise for the dedication of the Lansing team.

“Mike Moseley (…) gave so much of himself to this project,” said Groff. “On top of his regular duties at the town, Mikey devoted an inordinate amount of time and effort to ensure that this project will provide what the town needs for the new campus. He worked closely with his fellow Lansing teammates, and provided sound professional input to all the teams, always with the mantra that ‘the taxpayers of Lansing come first.'”

Groff also recognized the contributions of Lansing Town Counsel Guy Krogh, former Town Supervisor Ed LaVigne, and Town Engineer David Herrick, who Groff says helped to save the taxpayers over a million dollars.

Moseley, partly inspired by the crews that came before him, says the new facilities will be transformational for the town and its employees.

“Now, in this moment, when this project is finally becoming a reality, we can look to a future for Lansing knowing that the town will have a proper home for its Department of Public Works and all that that encompasses,” added Groff. “We can sleep better knowing that our employees, which by the way are the town’s most valuable assets, have a safe and healthy environment in which to work, and that our trucks and equipment are in an environment that will help prolong their useful lives.”

The town anticipates the new facility will be ready for occupation by Fall 2026.
