ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The City of Ithaca has closed the Seneca Street Parking Garage in the interest of public safety.

On April 10, officials received a report of concrete debris falling from the 3rd floor of the structure to the sidewalk below.

An inspection by personnel from the Fire Marshal’s Office and the City Engineering Department revealed several problem areas on the building facade. The decision was made to shut down the garage until further notice and close the sidewalks surrounding the garage on North Tioga Street, East Seneca Street, and North Aurora Street. A third-party engineering review will be conducted for overall safety.

The TCAT Seneca at Commons bus stop is also closed. Pedestrians are urged to follow the signage and only cross the street at intersections where it’s safe to do so.

Garage users are being asked to move their vehicles as soon as possible. The Tioga Street entrance will remain open until all parked cars have been removed from the garage, but no new vehicle entries will be permitted.

Monthly permit holders will be able to use the Green Street Parking Garage.
