ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Ithaca’s Sciencenter is mourning the loss of a former leader and dedicated volunteer.

In a Facebook post, officials say longtime employee Barbara Thorp has passed away. Thorp worked at the science museum for 14 years from 1992-2006, retiring as Director of Operations. She remained involved after retirement, volunteering over 1000 hours in the Saltonstall Animal Room.

Director of Live Exhibits Colin Meeks credits Thorp with creating the animal volunteer program.

“She had a love for animals, especially our beloved snake, Percy,” said Meeks on Facebook. “She wanted visitors to interact with the snakes, so she started bringing them out on her own. Her dedication inspired more volunteers to engage our visitors with up-close interactions with our animals.”

Colleagues say her passion and dedication have left a lasting legacy at the Sciencenter.
