ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — An Ithaca lawyer is running for office.

Iris Packman seeks the Democratic nomination to represent District 3 on the Tompkins County Legislature. Packman, a labor lawyer and Belle Sherman resident, says working families need experienced advocates on the Legislature who understand the challenges of raising kids amid rising costs and federal policies targeting marginalized populations.

“I bring decades of advocacy experience fighting for equity, justice, and a good future for our children,” Packman said. “I also have leadership experience working across the aisle to solve complex issues that transcend party lines.”

The seat is currently occupied by Susan Currie, who’s not running for re-election. Packman will be a guest Friday on Ithaca’s Morning News.

Meantime, an Earth scientist also seeks a legislative seat. Dr. Judith Hubbard is running in the Democratic primary for District 5, which was created after redistricting in Tompkins County added two seats on the Legislature. Hubbard, who’s a Democrat, says she wants to provide strong leadership to protect the people and institutions, including immigrants, non-profit groups, and LGTBQ.

“Many Tompkins County residents are dealing with unprecedented uncertainty about their lives and livelihoods,” Hubbard said. “The increasingly unpredictable political environment will have real impacts for many people who live and work here. We need proactive leadership to help ensure that our community stays resilient and can even thrive during trying times.”

Hubbard adds as a legislator, she’d work to make sure the property assessment process is fair and transparent. Dr. Hubbard will appear on Ithaca’s Morning News on Monday, March 3.

Primaries are being held on June 24, 2025.
