ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Ithaca is searching for its next Director of Planning and Development.

On August 10, officials announced that current Director Lisa Nicholas will retire in January 2027 after 21 years with the city.

Nicholas has served as director since 2022, following lengthy roles as Deputy Director and Acting Director.

“Lisa’s leadership has helped shape modern Ithaca,” said Mayor Robert Cantelmo. “Her dedication to thoughtful planning, housing opportunities, economic vitality, and sustainable development leaves a lasting impact on our community. We are grateful for her years of public service and the professionalism, knowledge, and commitment she brought to this role every day.”

According to the city, the director serves as the principal administrative leader of the department, overseeing planning and development operations, environmental review, historic preservation, code enforcement, redevelopment initiatives, and relevant programs. The position works closely with city staff, elected officials, community organizations, residents, and private sector partners.

“This is one of the most important leadership positions in city government,” added Mayor Cantelmo. “The next director will have the opportunity to help guide housing policy, redevelopment initiatives, economic development efforts, sustainability planning, and major community investments.
