ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Ithaca’s water supply is safe after a couple tense days at the city’s water treatment plant on Water Rd.

Officials say two incompatible chemicals were accidentally mixed during a routine delivery on Tuesday, which resulted in the creation of chlorine gas. The Ithaca Fire Department responded and declared the facility safe to enter.

According to a statement from the city, plant operators “discovered that ongoing attempts to clear the chemicals were not successful and residual gas remained inside the building.  The Ithaca Fire Department was again dispatched and remains on the scene at the Water Treatment Plant. Presently, an IFD-led hazmat team is working to ensure that the plant is clear for employees to reenter.”

“There is no threat or interruption to the city’s water supply, which is continuously monitored to ensure the utmost protection for residents,” the city said. “City officials are coordinating with Bolton Point Water System to ensure that there will be no water service disruptions.”

An Ithaca SIREN alert at 9:46 p.m. Wednesday sated IFD “has cleared from the water treatment plant. There is no threat to the public.”
