ALBANY, NY (607NewsNow) – Governor Kathy Hochul says new federal guidelines will hurt young kids in the state.

According to a release from the Governor’s Office, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has indicated that the federal government intends to phase out programs in 2027 that provide continuous coverage for vulnerable populations.

It would mean approximately 750,000 children under the age of 7 in New York would lose Medicaid and Child Health Plus coverage.

“New York will not stand by while the federal government jeopardizes children’s health coverage,” stated Hochul. “This misguided policy threatens the progress we’ve made in keeping young children connected to care during the most critical years of their development.”

In Tompkins County, the latest figures show 1,915 children in the affected age range are enrolled in Medicaid or Child Health Plus.

“Children in New York and across the country deserve access to high-quality and reliable health care,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “This policy will put their coverage at risk and hurt our kids. I will fight any attempt to rip health care away from our children and the most vulnerable in our communities, and I urge the Trump administration to reverse this destructive decision before it causes lasting harm to young children and families.”

In Cortland County, 1,651 kids would be affected, as would 1,557 in Tioga County.
