ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Grocery store workers are unionizing in Ithaca.
On Wednesday, employees at the GreenStar Co-op on Cascadilla Street voted to join Workers United of Upstate New York and Vermont. The vote passed 60-14. Locally, Workers United represents employees at Gimme! Coffee, the Sciencenter, Citizens’ Action, and the Ithaca Health Alliance. GreenStar on Cascadilla joins Buffalo’s Lexington Co-op as the second such organization in New York to unionize.
Workers say they want to build structures for better communication and accountability within the store.
“Now that the election is decided, we look forward to negotiating with management and building a path forward with them in ensuring the co-op continues to be an employer of choice, and the best place to work and shop in the city,” said Alicia Richard with Greenstar Customer Service.
According to the Tompkins County Workers Center, staff at the GreenStar location on East Buffalo Street will reportedly file for a union election next month.
