ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A homeless man has died in Ithaca.

The Ithaca Voice reports Roland Hoyt was discovered unconscious in a sleeping bag on the morning of December 2, 2024. The 60-year-old was located by authorities near the North Tioga and East Seneca Street intersection, about a block from Tompkins County’s Code Blue shelter. He was taken to Cayuga Medical Center.

Efforts to revive Hoyt were unsuccessful after doctors couldn’t bring his core temperature up, but a cause of death has not been released. The overnight low temperature from December 1 to December 2 was around 22 degrees.

Further reporting from the Ithaca Voice suggests Hoyt had been having problems with homelessness since he left Sayre, Pennsylvania around the time of his mother’s death about two years ago. A family member reportedly said Hoyt had struggled with a back injury that left him unable to work and a mental illness that went unmedicated at times.
