ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – No injuries were reported after an incident at the Tompkins County Jail.

On July 15, the entire facility, including inmates, was forced to evacuate around 4:30 p.m. after a significant amount of smoke filled the building.

Investigators determined that the cause of the smoke was a faulty heat pump. According to Sheriff Derek Osborne, the building was cleared, and incarcerated people were returned to their housing area after roughly 45 minutes.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Lansing Fire Department, Cayuga Heights Fire Department, Airport Fire, and Bangs Ambulance.
