ENDICOTT, NY (607NewsNow) – A Broome County village is suing a tech giant with historical local ties.
According to Fox 40, the Village of Endicott seeks ‘punitive and compensatory damages’ from IBM, alleging the company’s past actions have contaminated the local water supply with hazardous chemicals.
The lawsuit claims IBM, who operated a facility on North Street in Endicott from 1911 to 2002, used harmful chemicals linked to the contamination of soil, surface water, and groundwater.
Further details in the lawsuit allege IBM used industrial solvents and liquid cleaning agents that leached from drainpipes into the ground. The lawsuit also points to six spills and leaks, including a 4100-gallon leak in 1979, and a 2002 underground chemical plume that released gases in a 350-acre area south of the campus.
The village claims the main chemical causing the vapor was trichlorethylene, which has been linked to multiple illnesses, including cancer.
