PREBLE, NY (607NewsNow) – The Dwyer Park playground has been removed after an injury and subsequent lawsuit.
Following an assessment, it was determined that the playground equipment needs upgrades to meet modern safety standards. A comprehensive county-wide safety assessment was already underway by the newly hired Safety Director Jason DeRaiche, but Dwyer Park was prioritized after the accident.
Cortland County Legislative Chair Kevin Fitch says the county must make tough decisions as stewards of public safety and taxpayer resources.
“We understand that many in our community have fond memories of the playground at Dwyer Park, but we must ensure that our public spaces are safe and up to current safety standards,” said Fitch. “We have to make decisions that protect our residents while planning responsibly for the future.”
County officials acknowledge public interest in the incident but say they are limited in what can be shared publicly due to the pending litigation.
Discussions about the timeline, cost, and safety standards to replace or refurbish the playground are ongoing.
