ULYSSES, NY (607NewsNow) – Several roads in Ulysses will see speed reductions.
On July 24, the town announced that the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved lowering speed limits on parts of four different roadways in the near future.
Town officials say the speed studies were requested due to increased attendance at Taughannock Falls State Park and usage of the Black Diamond Trail, which recently opened a new trailhead building.
The DOT responded that lowering speed limits was appropriate “based on the existing roadside development, test drives, crash analysis, and road geometry.”
AFFECTED ROADS
- Gorge Road – will be lowered from 55 mph to 35 mph from Jacksonville Road to State Route 89
- Rice Road – will be lowered from 55 mph to 35 mph from Cayuga View Road to Taughannock Park Road
- Jacksonville Road – will be lowered from 55 mph to 40 mph from Cold Springs Road to the end of Jacksonville Road (Taughannock Park Road)
- Taughannock Park Road – will be lowered from 55 mph to 45 mph from Jacksonville Road to Route 96 (the existing 35 mph zone on Taughannock Park Road between Jacksonville Road and State Route 89 will remain)
The changes will take effect when the new signs are installed, which could take “a couple months.”
In related news, the DOT recently approved another speed study in Ulysses on Krums Corners Road.
