BINGHAMTON, NY (607NewsNow) – A river rescue in Binghamton.

On May 28, firefighters responded to the Susquehanna River for a report that a dog was stranded on an island.

According to the Binghamton Fire Department, a golden retriever named Winnie went into the river near Laurel Avenue while chasing geese and was swept downstream by the current. Crews deployed a boat to reach the island but were unable to capture the pup. After working with Animal Control, Winnie was recovered safely using a humane trap.

Winnie is now home safe with her family.
