BIG FLATS, NY (607NewsNow) – A Chemung County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after a close call in Big Flats.
Just after 7 p.m. on December 27, units were called to a single-vehicle crash on eastbound I-86. Additional deputies and other emergency units responded to the scene for safety because of poor light and visibility.

Deputy Kaitlyn Fletcher was partially parked on the shoulder at the rear of the scene with her signals on to direct oncoming traffic away from the accident. As Deputy Fletcher was exiting her patrol SUV, it was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling milk. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage.

Fletcher was transported to Corning Hospital and treated for minor injuries before her release. State Police conducted the investigation and ticketed the big rig operator, who was uninjured, for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and other violations.
The driver in the initial accident was reportedly treated for injuries.
