ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Cornell Police have made another arrest in last fall’s Statler Hall protest.
On January 28, authorities arrested 20-year-old Sumitra Pandit, a junior in the ILR school. Pandit is charged with unlawful assembly and obstructing governmental administration, both misdemeanors.
On September 19, 2024, a group of students, faculty, members of the public, and advocates allegedly forced their way into a career fair attended by both Boeing and L3Harris. Pandit is the fourth person arrested concerning the demonstration, part of a series urging Cornell to divest from weapons manufacturers. The suspension of international grad student Momodou Taal made national headlines after officials said he could face deportation. Taal’s suspension was ultimately lifted, albeit with restrictions.
In a release from the Coalition for Mutual Liberation (CML), Pandit says temporary suspensions given to demonstrators are the same that were given to a fraternity accused of sexual assault and coercion to take drugs.
“As a woman on this campus, I think the fact that students protesting against weapons manufacturers get the same punishment as rapists is disturbing and unacceptable,” said Pandit.
It’s unclear what further discipline the unnamed students involved in the fraternity incident received.
On February 6, Interim President Michael Kotlikoff and Provost Kavita Bala announced the formation of a sex assault task force.
