CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – Cortland Police officers could look slightly different in the near future.
On March 6, the Cortland Police Department (CPD) changed its grooming and appearance policy.
Under the new guidelines, officers can grow neatly trimmed beards and display body art while on duty. Officials say the move helps to align the department with “evolving societal norms while preserving a professional appearance.”
The change comes after lengthy discussions with members of the force, the community, and the department command staff.
“Many of our officers have expressed a desire to grow beards or display meaningful tattoos,” said CPD Chief David Guerrera. “Updating our standards will enhance officer satisfaction and strengthen our connection with the diverse community we serve.”
