CORTLAND, NY (CortacaToday) – The Cortland Fire Department says a fire was caused by lithium-ion batteries.
Firefighters made quick work of a Douglas Street dumpster fire around 4:45 Sunday afternoon. Cortland FD says the blaze was threatening electrical wires and a melting siding on a nearby house.

There were no injuries, and residents were able to immediately reoccupy the home. Cortland FD credits quick reporting to the 911 center and a fast response from firefighters.
Lithium-ion batteries should never be thrown out. They are accepted at most recycling centers, including in Cortland and Tompkins County. More information on how to properly dispose of lithium-ion batteries is available from the Environmental Protection Agency.
