CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — The Cortland County Jail is getting crowded. 

Sheriff Mark Helms tells WHCU is often at or near full capacity.

Helms favors building a new jail, though county legislators have not made a final decision. The sheriff says he wants to take a thoughtful and measured approach.

Cortland County’s jail is over 20 years old.
