CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — Three Cortland County departments will become one.

Legislators voted last night to merge Highway, Buildings and Grounds, and Weights and Measures into the Department of Public Works. It’ll be overseen by a commissioner appointed by the Legislature, who’ll serve a 4-year term.

According to the resolution, “The Cortland County Department of Public Works shall have and exercise such functions, powers and duties as may be prescribed by the Cortland County Legislature, including but not limited to the care, maintenance, supervision, control, construction, reconstruction, repair and improvement of all County roads, highways, bridges, culverts, and activities related to Cortland County roads and highways as provided in the laws of the State of New York including but not limited to the Highway Law of the State of New York, the General Municipal Law, the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and the regulations promulgated thereunder, and all activities heretofore performed by the Cortland County Highway Department.”

Several divisions will be under the DPW umbrella, including the 3 departments being replaced:

Airport
Buildings and Grounds
Dwyer Park
Highway
Recycling
Solid Waste
Weights and Measures

The Cortland County DPW’s inaugural commissioner will be Charles Sudbrink, the current county highway superintendent.
