CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — Cortland County’s jail is feeling some strain. 

Sheriff Mark Helms tells WHCU they’re still impacted by the statewide strike of corrections officers, which ended in March. 

On the other side of the population spike, Helms says he was able to increase his jail staff.

For three weeks earlier this year, corrections officers in New York went on strike to protest working conditions.
