CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — HEAP is delayed in Cortland County.

Because of the government shutdown, the Cortland County Department of Social Services says the Home Energy Assistance Program won’t start until November 17. Officials say the delayed date is tentative and could change if there’s no end to the shutdown.

“Once opened, applications can be submitted online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov or by calling (607) 428-5400 to request a paper application. Residents do not need to visit the Department of Social Services office to apply,” according to a news release.

HEAP helps low-income residents keep their homes heated in the winter and cool every summer.
