ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Cornell appears poised to head into the fall semester without the nearly 1200 employees on strike.

After calling the UAW back to the negotiating table earlier this week, no agreement was reached on Thursday. The University says it offered a new tier-less wage proposal with increased financial terms to no avail, adding that UAW representatives have also refused to include a mediator in the process, and asked for previous demands they agreed to set aside.

Meantime Cornell has asked faculty and staff to bring their own food or eat off-campus next week to maximize the dining experience for students due to the limited number of dining halls that will be open. Cornell is rolling out boxed to-go lunches and minimal grab-and-go options for students and guests with a meal plan.

Those options will be available beginning Monday between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

For its part, Cornell Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Christine Lovely, Interim Provost John Siciliano, and Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi said in a letter to the campus community that the school is committed to agreeing on a new employment contract and respects the rights of striking workers.

“We remain committed to good faith bargaining with the UAW and hope they will respond in kind so that we can reach a fair contract in the near term. We also want to remind ourselves that our striking UAW workers are fully and equally a part of our Cornell community. The inconveniences we are now experiencing are a clear indication of the essential role they play in the university’s overall workforce. They are fully within their rights to engage in the current labor action and those rights must be fully respected as we strive for a viable resolution.”

Cornell says it will share information with students directly on Sunday, August 25.
