ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A Cornell student is throwing her hat in the ring for Ithaca Common Council.
The Ithaca Voice reports that Big Red sophomore Hannah Shvets will seek the seat in the Fifth Ward, joining G.P. Zurenda and Deborah Fisher on the ballot. Shvets, who moved to Ithaca in 2016, says her status as both a student and permanent resident would bring a unique perspective to local government.
In January, Zurenda, a social worker, told WHCU he’s running because city taxes have become unsustainable. In February, Fisher joined Ithaca’s Morning News to discuss her reasons for running, which include affordable housing and the federal impact on higher education.
The Fifth Ward seat is currently held by Alderperson Clyde Lederman, who announced late last year he would not seek reelection to focus on his studies at Cornell.
