ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — The local baseball community is reacting to the largest contract in sports history.

Juan Soto is joining the New York Mets on a $765 million deal. Cornell pitcher Carson Mayfield said the contract is telling of the times.

“The market in general is just inflated,” he said.

Soto is the second baseball player in the past year to secure at least a $700 million deal. Shohei Ohtani did so with the Los Angeles Dodgers last December.

Mayfield said Soto is a generational player.

“The guy is the best hitter in baseball,” he said.

Soto slugged 41 home runs with the New York Yankees last season.
