ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Historic sculptures have received new life in Tompkins County.
Eight statues in the Cayuga Medical Center’s Mitchell Gardens were restored late last month. Created in the 1930s and placed in the children’s tuberculosis ward in the then Biggs Memorial Hospital, they are the only artworks left in the county from the New Deal Era Works Progress Administration.

The sculptures were under the care of artist Steve Carver, who previously restored them with conservator Kasia Maroney in 2016, and led this restoration effort to address weathering. Carver himself raised money for the restoration and ongoing maintenance.
“These sculptures aren’t just art, they are our country’s connection to a pivotal era in history,” said Carver. “I’m honored to help preserve them for future generations.”
Officials say an annual spray treatment will help prevent dirt, moss, and lichen buildup.
