BIG FLATS, NY (607NewsNow) – Chemung County’s only Social Security Administration Office is slated for closure.

The Big Flats building’s lease is being terminated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long-Term Care tells WENY-TV the shutdown will dramatically reduce access to vital resources for the county’s most vulnerable residents.

“Our employees show up to work each day looking to help their community and provide these much-needed services, now they have been left in the dark,” said American Federation of Government Employees Local 3342 President Shawn Halloran. “Closing this office can have devastating impacts on the workforce and the ability to provide assistance to local residents.”

According to Senator Chuck Schumer, the office has over a dozen staff members. He has penned a letter to Social Security Administration Acting Commissioner Leland Dudek looking for answers.
