AUBURN, NY (607NewsNow) – A Cayuga County official disagrees with a decision by the New York State Parole Board.
In a May 27 Facebook post, District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci says the early release of Dain Schneider is an insult to the memory of Chloe Calhoun.
In August 2016, Schneider pled guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide after hitting and killing the 18-year-old Calhoun in a DWI crash in the Town of Owasco. Schneider collided with Calhoun’s SUV on East Lake Road as she was leaving an ice cream stand. Schneider was sentenced to 7 to 24 years in prison in October 2016.
According to the DA’s Office, Schneider was driving 54 miles per hour over the speed limit, had a blood alcohol content of .23%, and had two previous DWI convictions.
Grome Antonacci was especially critical of the board’s decision because it was discretionary, and they were not legally required to release Schneider.
“The decision also endangers our community, because in the past, only incarceration has stopped this individual from getting behind the wheel while intoxicated,” stated Grome Antonacci.
Grome Antonacci adds that her office sent multiple letters to the board over the years opposing Schneider’s release, most recently on Christmas Eve 2024.
