CORTLAND, NY (CortacaToday) – A temporary burn ban has been declared in Cortland County.
Legislative Chair Kevin Fitch issued the order on Wednesday in response to dry conditions. It will remain in effect until December 1, 2024. The order follows similar bans in Tioga and Tompkins Counties after Berkshire and Lansing suffered large brush fires.
“Given the current weather patterns and exceptionally dry conditions, we must take immediate action to protect public safety and prevent any risk of uncontrolled fires or wildfires,” said Fitch in a statement. “This burn ban is a necessary measure to ensure the safety of our community and to protect our natural resources, property, and public infrastructure from potential fire hazards.”

NO OUTDOOR BURNING
- of refuse, trash, and/or other solid waste
- of loose leaves or leaf piles
- of downed limbs and branches
- of grass, brush, or forest-covered land
Only grilling and small contained cooking fires are permitted and must be done so with extreme caution.
Residents are encouraged to check for updates or changes to the ban length through Cortland County’s website.
