ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – Ithaca’s budget is delayed.
Residents largely spoke in opposition to the city’s proposed 2025 spending plan at the public budget hearing at the Ithaca Common Council meeting on Wednesday night. Some shared opinions on where cuts should be made, called on Cornell University to increase its contributions to the city, and urged local state and federal representatives to revisit tax-exempt land agreements.
Alderperson Margaret Fabrizio was among others on council who echoed those sentiments, saying the property tax burden on homeowners and landlords is unsustainable.
Several amendments were made for a modest decrease in the total budget, but Alderperson Clyde Lederman, among other supporters of the proposed spending plan, said there isn’t much wiggle room without a significant reduction of services.
The council ultimately voted to table budget discussions to have more time to consider and submit amendments. Mayor Robert Cantelmo set a Friday afternoon deadline for submissions. They’ll take up talks at their next meeting this coming Wednesday.
