BINGHAMTON, NY (607NewsNow) – The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has released the autopsy results of an inmate who died last year.

Officials say 38-year-old Chelsey Davis’s cause of death was chronic alcohol use with hepatic cirrhosis, with several contributing factors, including hemorrhagic pancreas, cardiac hypertrophy, and atherosclerotic coronary disease.

“This was the first death our administration had encountered, but I hope Chelsey’s family can find some comfort in knowing that our medical and correctional staff performed admirably and with vigilance, doing everything they could to save Chelsey’s life,” said Sheriff Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar. “We have remained in contact with Chelsey’s family throughout this investigation, and we are grateful for their approval to release the results.”

The Port Dickinson woman was found dead in the Broome County Correctional medical unit on October 8, 2025, just eight hours after being admitted to the facility. According to a timeline released by the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, Davis exhibited no signs of a medical emergency before going into cardiac arrest, and she received her third medical evaluation just 20 minutes prior.

Davis’s toxicology report found no alcohol or drugs in her system at the time of death.
