ELMIRA, NY (607NewsNow) – After a ban was passed last month, a dozen homeless people have been cited for illegal camping in Elmira.

WENY-TV reports the Elmira Police Department issued appearance tickets on December 18 at an encampment near the Lackawanna Trail. The violators, who face fines and possible jail time, were given 48 hours to remove their belongings before police cleared the site.

Mayor Dan Mandell says the 12 individuals will appear in court next month and were encouraged to contact the Department of Social Services and Catholic Charities.

In related news, the Town of Southport recently announced they’ll consider a similar ban.
