ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Tompkins County has again been named a climate-smart community.
The county was recertified on Thursday at the silver level, which is the highest level achievable in the program and unlocks advanced grant opportunities. It’s part of the state’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the impacts of climate change.
“New York cannot tackle the climate crisis on its own,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “We applaud these local communities for standing with us and taking action to reduce emissions, protect local residents, and create the green jobs of the future.”
Tompkins County is one of four that achieved silver status in New York, and the only locally certified county in the region. Eleven additional communities received bronze certifications.
