ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Tompkins County leaders are encouraging Governor Hochul to help protect water quality at Cayuga Lake.

Officials fear the Cargill salt mine beneath the lake could collapse and contaminate the water. On Wednesday, the legislature approved a resolution that urges Hochul to require an environmental review of the mine’s operations.

Legislative Chairwoman Shawna Black says the water is a wonderful resource.

“I see Cayuga Lake as one of our greatest assets here in Tompkins County,” she says.

The resolution will be sent to the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
