ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Tompkins County leaders are urging the governor to modernize the ‘bottle bill.’

The Returnable Container Act currently offers a five-cent deposit on beverages. Local lawmakers want to see that amount double to a dime. Legislator Mike Lane thinks it’s been a long time coming.

“When I was a kid, this was like in the ’50s, the deposit on a quart bottle was a nickel,” he says. “With a nickel you could buy a standard Milky Way or a Snickers Bar.”

On Tuesday, the legislature voted unanimously to request the change.
