ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Health officials in Tompkins County say there have been no new cases of legionellosis for over a month after a summer spike.
Two cases were reported in August and early September, bringing the total since June to 14. That number includes one death. However, there have been no additional cases since mid-September. Remediation and precautionary disinfection have been performed at several local cooling towers, and monitoring will continue.
Dr. William Klepack is Tompkins County Whole Health’s Medical Director. He says the response has been thorough and things are trending in the right direction.
“We are nearing the end of the legionellosis season,” said Klepack. “While we have seen a higher-than-normal case rate in our county this year, our Environmental Health and Community Health Services teams have worked diligently with our NYSDOH colleagues to monitor and address Legionella in our community, and cooling tower operators have responded swiftly to remediate as needed.”
