OWEGO, N.Y. (WHCU) — A housing crisis in Tioga County is keeping an emergency declaration in place. 

Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey has extended a state of emergency until September 7. It’s been active since the spring. Sauerbrey says there’s a lack of temporary and permanent housing to provide shelter to asylum seekers from the southern border.

The state of emergency was first declared on May 11.
