CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — The chairman of the Cortland County Legislature will not extend the state of emergency.

Kevin Fitch says four weeks of research and work led him to drop the declaration, which expired yesterday. A state of emergency in Cortland County was declared May 12 over concerns of a potential surge in migrants seeking asylum.

Meanwhile, Tioga County has extended a state of emergency for another 30 days.

Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey says the extension, which was announced on Saturday, was necessary as the county’s housing crisis continues.

Since the original order was issued last month, Sauerbrey says Tioga County still lacks the infrastructure to house any asylum seekers.
