ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A proposed resolution to cut the home heating tax in Tompkins County has been defeated.

Legislator Mike Sigler suggested the county suspend its 4% tax on heating oil, natural gas, and wood beginning later this year until it’s fully eliminated by 2027. The resolution failed in a vote of nine to five during Tuesday’s meeting of the Tompkins County Legislature.

Sigler has introduced a similar resolution before, except the previous version recommended cutting the tax entirely instead of slowly reducing it over a few years.
