CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – One SUNY Cortland coach is calling it a career.
Long-time Red Dragon Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Spanbauer is hanging it up after 28 years at the helm. A graduate of SUNY Cortland himself, Spanbauer was named SUNYAC coach of the year six times on his way to three SUNYAC titles. He was also named the National Associations of Basketball Coaches East Region coach of the year four times and led the program to six NCAA Division III tournament appearances, including the program’s first in 1997.
He’ll end his tenure as the Red Dragon’s career leader in victories with 459. According to SUNY Cortland, Spanbauer will remain at the college as a physical education instructor and women’s tennis coach.
