CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — Cortland County does not have an undersheriff.

The position has been vacant since Budd Rigg’s retirement in July. Sheriff Mark Helms tells WHCU the vacancy is the result of a pay dispute.

Helms adds he’s tried discussing the issue with county managers.

Sheriff Helms says people have expressed interest in becoming undersheriff, but he wants to wait until the pay issue is resolved.

There’s been no comment from Cortland County officials.
