ITHACA, NY (WHCU) — The head of men’s hockey at Cornell is calling it quits.

Mike Schafer (file)

Mike Schafer will retire following the 2024 to 2025 season. Schafer, who’s been head coach for nearly 30 years, started with Big Red men’s hockey as a player while getting his education at Cornell in the 80s.

It’s been a tremendous experience helping the players and teams over the years to reach their goals while helping create Big Red pride and building spirit through Cornell hockey. I feel now is the perfect time for me to begin the transition into retirement.

During his 28 seasons, Schafer led the men’s hockey team to multiple championships and tournament action.

He’ll be replaced by Casey Jones, a 1990 Cornell grad who is currently the head coach at Clarkson University.
