ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A former Cornell employee is running for a seat on the Ithaca Common Council.

Margaret Fabrizio says she wants to represent the city’s Fifth Ward because unaffordability has reached a “breaking point.”

“If I were to sum up why I’m running, I would say that for us to be a visionary, affordable, equitable, wildly unique Ithaca, we need to be properly resourced, and that can’t happen by
just continuing to increase the tax burden on city residents, and in turn, on renters. There are too few of us to accomplish all we need to do and want to be. We need new partners and new revenue streams. Research, advocacy, thinking outside the box, and building alliances have been constant themes throughout my life and I think these will be useful skills for the issues that Common Council must grapple with.”

Fabrizio, who’s lived in the Fifth Ward for over four decades, adds that Ithaca is “under resourced.”

Fabrizio worked in student services at Cornell for over 30 years before retiring. She’s seeking a four-year term.
