ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The City of Ithaca is asking for public input about preserving a piece of local history.
A survey has been released to gauge support for the preservation of the Ithaca Gun Smokestack. Opinions vary on what the smokestack represents. The issue was discussed in a Planning and Economic Development Committee meeting last month, as a potential apartment complex could be built on the site.
Officials say the city’s participation does not guarantee the retention of the smokestack, but it does ensure that they’ll be involved in the future of the structure. If the city abstains from participating, the property developer would be free to demolish the smokestack.
