ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Newfield man who fired a shotgun near police last year has been convicted.

Richard Marks, 39, was found guilty by a jury on two counts of menacing a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, and contempt. The trial began on April 8 and concluded on Tuesday.

On April 15, 2023, deputies from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Trumbulls Corners Road. A woman at the residence told authorities that the then 38-year-old Marks had fled into a nearby wooded area on a UTV. Deputies say they observed Marks aim a shotgun in their direction and fire.

Marks has been taken to Tompkins County Jail to await sentencing. Tompkins County District Attorney Matt Van Houten says menacing a police officer is the most serious charge, a violent felony punishable by up to 8 years in state prison.

Marks’ sentencing is scheduled for June 5.
