JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WHCU) – A domestic incident call has led to a historic seizure of illegal weapons in Johnson City.
Johnson City Police found more than 40 weapons around 8:30 a.m. Friday while responding to 48-year-old DeLove Bennett’s apartment. When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed several illegal guns in the apartment. A search warrant was issued, and investigators seized 36 illegal pistols, 1 illegal shotgun, 5 assault rifles, a bulletproof vest, and a large quantity of high-capacity magazines and ammunition.
Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge called it “one of the largest, if not the largest illegal weapons seizures in the history of Broome County.”

Bennett is charged with first and second-degree felony criminal possession of a weapon, and misdemeanor unlawful possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device. More charges are possible.
“It’s important for everybody to realize that this is what a lot of people would have considered a routine domestic incident,” added Dodge. “And this just goes to show you, there is no routine call. These officers never know what kind of hornet’s nest they’re walking into.”
