ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — The Tompkins County Jail population remains higher than last year.

District Attorney Matt Van Houten says inmates are there for various reasons.

“There are a few people who are waiting for trials, and they’ve been waiting for a while,” he says. “There are people who are there waiting for mental health beds, or psychiatric facility beds… It’s a combination of things.”

Van Houten adds changes in bail laws are not to blame.
