ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A local group hopes to pause an artificial turf project at Ithaca College.

The project involves constructing an athletic field at Butterfield Stadium. Yayoi Koizumi with Zero Waste Ithaca says the town’s Planning Board recently approved the project — despite there being a petition against it with over 800 signatures.

Koizumi says the school has the power to stop the construction.

“The Town Board might have approved it, but it’s still up to the college whether or not to go ahead with this project,” she says.

A rally was held on Thursday to oppose the environmental impacts of the turf. Koizumi says the project is harmful to local soil and drinking water.

WHCU has contacted Ithaca College for comment.
